Simply Sausages - A Very British Sausage

Simply Sausages, makers of Smithfield’s most famous sausages, and revived by founder Martin Heap last summer, is now to be made available permanently thanks to consumer demand.

Martin Heap, who created the original recipes said; ‘Customers used to travel for miles to taste my sausages which have always contained British regional produce. We always use the fresh British herbs whenever they’re in season and we source our fresh leeks and onions from Yorkshire when possible allowing us to keep ingredients as fresh as possible. We believe in proper food made with proper ingredients and want to give our customers proper British sausages. Our pigs roam free outdoors and in deep straw bedded barns, unlike pigs which you might find are used in a cheap mass produced product.

The sausage which started it all, the Smithfield No 1, contains 88% fresh British pork. The remaining 12% is made up of free range British eggs, as well as herbs and spices, including ground nutmeg and breadcrumbs to add succulence.

The perfect way to cook a sausage is to simply pan fry the sausages on a hot heat. There is no need to pierce them as they will cook to perfection straight from the pack.

Simply sausages Smithfield No.1 with Nutmeg are available from Waitrose and Morrisons stores with RRP £2.49.

Notes to editors:

• Nearly 3 tonnes of fresh herbs, fruit and vegetables are used in the factory each day.

• Meat is delivered daily and is sourced from a local Yorkshire supplier with cuts quality checked by both Martin Heap and the quality team at Simply Sausages

• Simply Sausages’ recipes are created by chefs, not butchers or marketeers, to ensure the taste is superior to other sausages

• The first Simply Sausages retail shop was opened in August 1991 in Smithfield Meat Market London by Martin Heap, chef, restaurateur and Westminster College cookery lecturer
