Breakfast and Brunch in France - an overview

Le Petit Dejeuner (little lunch)
The Continental style breakfast is most commonly found in France best know for offering stimulant and sustenance. Freshly baked baguettes, croissants, pain chocolat, brioche or toast and preserve would be the norm often accompanied by steaming bowls of café au lait or hot chocolate. Black coffee and tea are also popular.

One fun thing they do is make a sort of pain au chocolat by getting a piece of baguette, pushing a strip of chocolate (one line of 4-6 squares from a big bar) into the middle and microwaving it for 20 seconds so the chocolate just starts to melt. (Be careful the chocolate doesn’t get too hot or you could burn your mouth) Cheryl Pasquier 5/07/06

Just an anecdote, but I have seen many French people at breakfast who don't butter their bread or croissant, but prefer to drop the butter into the coffee to melt and then dip the bread/croissant into it. I suppose it saves time. Terry 10/08/06

In France we had bowls of hot chocolate and dipped pain chocolat and freshly baked bread in it. Heavenly! Katemolly. 10/08/06

I get perhaps an inordinate amount of pleasure from the baskets of fresh white bread and croissants served with creamy butter and home made jams served all over France. Even on a 2 or 3 week trip I just never get bored. Kaveyf. 10/08/06
