Breakfast and Brunch in Spain - an overview
Desayuno
A traditional Spanish breakfast is chocolate y churros - hot chocolate with Spanish style sweet fritters rather like an elongated or star shaped doughnut covered in sugar. The hot chocolate would be very thick and sweet.
At home it is more common to have a cup of coffee, olive oil or buttered toast, buns or a ham and cheese Spanish sandwich.
In Catalan, olive country, bread is often served with olive oil instead of butter and a favourite breakfast treat is pan con tomate, an ancestor of the American pizza. It is made by brushing a thick, crusty slice of grilled bread with olive oil, garlic, tomato and sometimes topping it with a slice of ham. Fried eggs and omelettes are also popular. |

In Spain its churros (little crispy doughnuts) dipped into the sort of hot chocolate that is so thick you have to spoon it rather than sip it. I used to like it but I find the chocolate too sweet now. Sue 10/08/06
Spanish breakfast is quite similar to a French one - and I know what I am saying, I was living there for more than 3 years! Since Spanish love huge and very late suppers, often eaten at 22 or 23h, in the morning they are not hungry and at 8 am when they breakfast they only have a coffee, a glass of orange juice and a small cookie/ some cereal. Later at 11am you can go for another coffee with tortilla sandwich o croissant with ham. Tortilla sandwich is really something very unusual, since tortilla is a mixture of eggs and fried potatoes, served with bread :) But it tastes great there! Buen Provecho, as the Spanish say!
