Breakfast and Brunch in Netherlands - an overview

Ontbijt
At breakfast in the Netherlands you might encounter a local speciality known as groene haring (green herring). These are small herring that have been lightly pickled in brine, and they may be eaten by picking up one by the tail, holding it up over the head and dropping it into the mouth. Instead of coffee, tea or hot chocolate some Dutch breakfasters might choose anijsmelk, warm milk flavoured with aniseed.

In Holland there is a tradition of sprinkling vermicelli/hundreds & thousands type things on buttered bread for breakfast. Not a big fan of it myself so I stick firmly to my tea and toast with Marmite English roots! Nicky 11/08/06

I noticed in a hotel in Maastricht that they had hundreds and thousands out for putting on sandwiches. I hadn't seen that since I was a wee girl and we used to get them at birthday parties. Maastricht was the first time I had seen them in years and definitely the first time for breakfast. (Just for the recore they tasted as yummy as when I was eight years old) Peasoupdragon 11/08/06
